Why Does Scalp Micropigmentation Take Three Sessions?

01/05/2022

If anyone who owns a scalp micropigmentation studio tells you, "We can do it in one sitting", you should run in the opposite direction.

Why? Because good things take time...well, at least 3 sessions.

Scalp micropigmentation isn't an ordinary procedure. You need to go to a certified and licensed practitioner who specialises in SMP. Your practitioner should be trained in the art of SMP. But the million dollar question is, why does the procedure take at least 3 sessions? What happens during the sessions?

We've answered all of your questions below:

You'll Go in for a Consultation First

The first appointment will not be a session but a consultation. Your practitioner will make you feel comfortable by getting to know a little bit about you. They will then ask you about your family history, your medical history, and whether or not your hair loss has been caused by something other than alopecia.

They will talk to you in detail about your lifestyle as well. All of these questions are normal because the practitioner needs to know whether you are a good candidate for SMP. There are certain things that can stop you from becoming an eligible candidate. These include:

  • Autoimmune diseases
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Kidney disease
  • High blood pressure
  • Diabetes
  • Cancer

If you are taking blood thinners, you cannot qualify as a candidate. You will need to consult your GP first.

If you qualify as a candidate, your practitioner will then discuss options with you. These include the type of style you want and the type of hairline you want to create.

The Pigment Needs Time to Adjust

During the first session, your practitioner will be very cautious (they'll be cautious throughout the other procedures too) because they will need to see how the pigment looks on your scalp. They will implant the pigment around the hair follicles. You will then have to make sure that you don't get your scalp wet for at least 10 days.

You will need to avoid excessive sweat and moisture. Your practitioner will give you a topical cream to soothe any irritation that might occur during the healing process.

The Final Results Will Be Worth It

Your practitioner will call you back after 2 weeks for a check-up and the final session. They will complete the SMP procedure and you will have to follow the same aftercare routine for 10 days. After this, you will be done and will only need to come back for a touch-up every 4 to 5 years.

So, there you have it! This is what will happen during your three SMP sessions.
