How Long Does Scalp Micropigmentation Take To Heal?

12/14/2021

You're extremely nervous about booking an appointment with a scalp micropigmentation practitioner. And despite your loved ones telling you time and time again that the procedure will go smoothly, you can't help but think, "What if things go wrong" and "What if it takes too long to heal?"

After all, that is a legitimate concern. Since SMP is similar to tattooing, there is some aftercare involved as well. Just like how you have to apply topical creams on your tattoos, you need to be careful after an SMP session.

But the million dollar question is: how long does it take for your scalp to heal after your first session? Let's take a look and find out:

Expect a Little Bit of Redness

You should expect a little bit of redness on your scalp for the first few days after your first session. However, this will go away after 2 or 3 days. It's completely normal and if your scalp starts itching, or there's mild bruising, avoid touching the area. Remember that the body natural reacts to inflammation of any kind after a 'wound' so redness is natural.

Since the practitioner will be using a special hand tool to implant pigment into the scalp, your body might consider it a 'wound' for a few days.

Touching the area with your bare hands can lead to infections, which can lead to complications. Your practitioner will provide you with a special cream or ointment that you can apply. Make sure to discuss all of this with them beforehand, during the initial consultation.

Avoid Working Out for a Week

So, the only bad news is that you can't go to the gym for a couple of days. This usually means a week. Unfortunately, you also won't be able to wash your head for a few days. This is so that the scalp can heal as quickly as possible and the results of the scalp micropigmentation will not be affected by excessive sweat and water.

You should also avoid using any products or anything that can irritate your scalp. This will slow down the healing process and lead to infections. Also, avoid scrubbing or using any kind of hats or caps that can irritate the scalp.

If your hat or cap does not irritate your scalp, then it's completely fine and you can wear it. The healing process will take about 10 days and then everything will go back to normal.
